What is a big sit? A big sit is when we sit in one location and count all the birds we can see that from one spot. It could last a few hours or a full day and is a unique chance to mindfully enjoy the birds that naturally come to you!. It’s also an opportunity to challenge ourselves to identify birds and help us to better understand local bird life, with a chance to see local birds and those passing through on migration!

For this inaugural Toronto Big Sit, you can count birds for up to 12 hours in one of the city’s great parks, in a COVID-safe way. We’ll be at the south end of Woodbine Park and you can come for as long or as little as you would like. Enjoy the spring weather, count the birds if you are experienced, or learn more about them from experienced birders if you’d like.

What can be better than being in the outdoors with like-minded people, birds singing and binoculars? Sit, relax, breathe, connect with the community and take your time to enjoy birds with us.

The accessible event is free and you can feel free to bring your own lawn chair and a set of masks. We will designate chair spaces that comply with COVID health and safety regulations and will allow 15 participants at the same time. You can join us for the whole day or for one or two hours; however, we need to know your start time and how long you will participate, in advance. Please complete the registration form below and we will create a schedule of all the available spaces during the day. We will confirm your participation by May 17th at 5 pm. Please be on time to keep your slot.

Please note that this event could be cancelled due to Provincial or Municipal regulations. We will let you know if and only in case of cancellation on the day before.

The rules:

– Count all the birds within a 17m diameter

– Follow COVID health and safety regulations

– Count the birds you spot from within the circle. You can approach them for an ID or see them closer.

– Enjoy and slow down
