A meeting with a Striated Caracara in the late 1990s changed Jonathan Meiburg’s life, setting him on a quest to learn everything he could about the world’s ten caracara species; where these birds of prey come from, how they survive, and how their adaptations could help them evolve in a changing world. In his quest, Jonathan discovered so much more than he expected, and he tells of his adventures and findings in his recently published first book – A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey. Join us for this interview and discussion with Jonathan to learn more about his adventures in discovering these fascinating birds and their world. Please note: Complete the post-event survey for a chance to win one of four prize copies, courtesy Penguin Random House Canada.

Author Biography: In 1997, Jonathan Meiburg received a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to travel to remote communities around the world, a year-long journey that sparked his enduring fascination with islands, birds, and the deep history of the living world. Since then, he’s written reviews, features, and interviews for print and online publications including The Believer, The Talkhouse, and The Appendix on subjects ranging from a hidden exhibit hall at the American Museum of Natural History to the last long-form interview with author Peter Matthiessen. But he’s best known as the leader of the band Shearwater, whose albums and performances have often been praised by NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Pitchfork. He lives in central Texas.
